9. Post Office (1882-1992)

A manual telephone exchange operated in Broke since the end of the 1800s and by 1974 there were 40 telephones connected to it. Miss Laura Lancaster and Mrs Jessie Forbes were two of the post mistresses and telephone exchange operators. The Post Office was the hub of activity during an emergency, when the postmistress manned the phones day and night to keep residents up-to-date with information.
