12. Original Post Office Site

The village of Broke was officially surveyed in 1860 and one of the first purchasers of an allotment was wheelwright and builder, Joseph Clarke. It was at his premises that the first local post office operated, and Joseph was appointed the first postmaster. Interestingly, the first post office in Broke was designated as the Fordwich Post Office! With the growing number of inhabitants, who were referred to as ‘Brokeites’, the Fordwich Post Office had its name officially changed to Broke Post Office in 1878.
